StorURL is an offline bookmark manager for Windows desktops. It helps you to store links to all of your favorite websites in one central repository. It works with the browsers installed on your system so you can open your links in any web browser available to you from one central interface.
A patch for the Microsoft .NET 3.5 framework may be required for your system for the most recent version of StorURL. If you have trouble launching the application, check the Prerequisites section below for the appropriate link for your system (Win 7 and Win8/10 require different patches).

  • Import your bookmarks from most major browsers, including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer and Opera.
  • Open websites in any browser installed on your computer, directly from within StorURL.
  • Store and sort sites in unlimited categories.
  • Enable a floating toolbar that you can keep anywhere on your screen, for quick access to all your bookmarks.
  • Generate HTML “home” pages containing links from one or all categories.
  • Save credentials for any site in an encrypted format.
  • Open and manage unlimited numbers of databases. Have one for work bookmarks and a separate one for home.
  • Portable mode! Now, run it from a USB thumb drive! Check out the download section.
  • Specify a browser for each individual bookmark so websites that only work in certain browsers will automatically open where they need to.

In this modern era, sometimes you aren’t able to get to your own personal PC where StorURL may be installed. If you’re the type of person who moves around from computer to computer, there is a StorURL solution for you! Check out our web-based version of StorURL, which is available for use for free, just like the desktop version.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I export my bookmarks from StorURL into <Your Browser Here>?
It is not possible to export bookmarks from StorURL into a specific browser format. StorURL was not designed to be a conversion tool. If you are trying to move your bookmarks from one browser to another, there are better tools available on the web.
I am getting an error message about SQLite or something similar. What would cause this problem?
You most likely need to install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update listed in the prerequisites on this page. Please make sure that is installed and try launching the application again.
After launching in the application, the user interface disappears. Where did it go?
There was a known in issue in older versions of StorURL where the configuration file would become corrupt and open the window as zero pixels wide and zero pixels tall, making it impossible to see. The best solution to this problem is to find the configuration file in %APPDATA%\HazteK Software\StorURL and either manually edit the contents or delete the file and reconfigure the application. While you are at it, you should upgrade to a newer version which has extra checks to mitigate this problem.
Can I rearrange the order of bookmarks within a category?
Currently, the application does not allow for rearranging bookmarks. Due to the design of the database that holds the information, it's not easily possible to sort the bookmarks like this. You can, however, use a simple hack to order your bookmarks how you like. By default, the category is sorted by Site Title. If you add numbers to the beginning of the titles, you can control which order the bookmarks are in. For example, something like this:
All Trains, All the Time
Best Cars in the World
Dogs Love Trains, Too
Great Boating Experiences
Trains, Planes and Automobiles
Could be renamed to keep all the train sites together:
010 All Trains, All the Time
020 Dogs Love Trains, Too
030 Trains, Planes and Automobiles
040 Best Cars in the World
050 Great Boating Experiences

Chrome has near to non existent bookmarks manager the same goes for browsing history, old Firefox and Opera Presto browser had a much better functionalities as Chrome has today. Chrome sucks a lot coz its developed by Google.. Try to import/export bookmarks and browsing history betwen the same brands of Chrome browsers - INCOMPATIBLE file formats !!!! Your solution is also somewhat cucumber some. U should integrate all of those mad man developers file formats for interchange history and bookmarks on already exported file formats on known locations and not searching for deep files across system dive or even worse if having a portable browser ! Try that on Iridium portable to Opera Browser portable u see exactly what i mean.

Hey Joel!

I am loving your app StorURL! I have been looking for an app like this for a long time. I ran across it through the portable app manager SyMenu.

I noticed that that the "Get Site Icons" function is no longer working: "This functionality has been temporarily disabled due to issues with the public API." I also saw that in the change log for 3.0.36.8 it says "removed favicon code causing GDI+ error".

Forgive me if you are already aware...
A KeePass plugin called Yet Another Favicon Downloader lets you switch to several different providers within the app. You can probably take a look at the app and their GitHub to get an idea of how they implement this functionality.

Thanks for the great app and I hope you continue to update it!

Hi Anz,

This appears to be an issue in the undocumented Google API I am using to retrieve favicons from sites. I have it logged as a bug, but have not had the time to research an alternative and implement it into the application. In the short term, I've found that after clicking the Auto Fill button, if I click on the favicon that is retrieved, and change it to another icon, it seems to work around the bug. Feel free to contact me via the contact page if you continue to have issues.

If you update to the latest version 3.0.36.8, this crash should no longer occur. I've temporarily removed the code to retrieve favicons from the sites, as that is what is crashing the application.

This program could be great if you would get rid of .net framework dependency (and possibly visual C++ redistributable). Like it is now, using it in Linux with Wine is a headache... and more and more people use Linux. You could use Free Pascal and Lazarus for this.

Hi Adrian,

Thank you for your comments. It is definitely possible for someone who has knowledge and experience to write a program like this to be cross-platform compatible. Unfortunately, I am not one of those people. I have experience writing applications for the Windows environment, and on the Linux side of things, I stick to scripting at the command line. As I have mentioned in other comments, I write most of the applications on my site for my own use first and foremost. Since I don't use Linux, except at the command line level on my servers, I find it hard to find the resolve to build something I just won't use.

Frameworks like .NET just make it simpler, since there are many libraries to draw on that can provide functionality. Without them, you'd have to write all of that functionality yourself, increasing complexity exponentially. Since you mentioned a couple of alternate programming options, maybe you could take up the mantle on developing something like StorURL for your own use on Linux. The good news is that the application itself is rather simple, and could be replicated by most anyone with programming skills, as long as you have access to libraries to take care of low level things like database access or HTML parsing.

Good luck, and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about how the software works for your own replication efforts.

November 8, 2021
Hello Tispu,

The source code for most of my applications, including StorURL, is not available to the public. If you are looking for the database structure to integrate with the application, it is freely accessible using the built-in database editing tool. It's a standard database format, so you can also use any SQLite 3 tools to view/edit the database.

reply
Joey Hazlett
September 15, 2021
Hi Richard,

There are not any parameters for what you are asking about. If you need a silent install, you can use the Portable version and a quick batch script to automatically unzip it in the necessary directory, then have it remove the "portable" file that is included with the ZIP file. That one file missing will convert it from a "portable" install to a "system" install, where your database and preferences are stored in %APPDATA% instead of the local directory.

Hi Andreas,

If you want to open a private tab, you will need to set up a Custom browser and specify the necessary argument for loading a private tab. For example, if you want Chrome to open in Incognito mode, you'd add the -incognito parameter. If you are using Firefox, the parameter would be -private. I'm sure most of the other browsers would also work the same way.

I have started using StoreURL Portable a while ago. Only today I went deeper into the option and found the "Floating Treeview" which was exactly what I needed and makes it easy to add bookmarks directly from the toolbar.
I am saving the StoreURL Portable in the Cloud and would the perfect Workflow would be: 1. Have the option to start up StoreURL automatically, 2. have the "floating treeview" starting automatically.
Are these options already available with StoreURL? If not, I would like to suggest them for future development.
Thank you again. I have tested many other apps and I love StoreURL the most.

Hi Peter,

To start up StorURL automatically on system boot, just create a shortcut to the executable in your standard Windows startup directory. The easiest way to get to it is to press Win+R on your keyboard, and in the run dialog type shell:startup.
If you want it to start up with the floating treeview already open, just append --treeview to the shortcut parameters.

Side note, I am working on a version of StorURL called StorURL Mini that is JUST the floating treeview. It doesn't have all extra features of StorURL, so it will run as sort of a companion to the full application. If you would like beta test it for me, please contact me via the contact page and I'll get you a copy.

Very nice tool, thanks for that. Unfortunately one , to my view, essential feature is missing. StorURL doesn't keep the timestamps contained in the imported data. Many people have URL collected since years and wouldn't like to lose information. I appreciate that browsers store in different formats but add_date should be present. Is it possible to add this at least as an option ?

Hello,

After installing the current version of StorUrl, I created a test bookmark folder including urls. I also imported a list of several hundred bookmarks. Two weeks later, StorUrl is only running in the background. The user interface has disappeared. In the AppData there are only two files (recent.xml and settings.xml) which do not contain any saved data. The StorUrl database can only be opened in the installation folder via the databaseEditor. The saved entries can be viewed there, but they cannot be marked and saved as a whole.

Question: How can I save my data? The FAQ entry doesn't help me. Thank you in advance for a helpful advice

Hi Lucas,

This sounds like the window location configuration may have been corrupted. Please check your settings.xml file for the section where the WindowLeft, WindowTop, WindowWidth, and WindowHeight settings are. Try changing the left and top to 0 and the width and height to something like 640 and 480 while the application is closed, and then launch it again. Hopefully that will put it back in the top left corner of your main screen and you can retrieve all of your data.

This program is good, but the floating tree view function is a bit unfortunate.

The floating tree view does not have an autorun function when the program starts, so you have to click again.

Also, there is no auto hide feature like taskbar or the ability to call tree view with keyboard shortcuts.

Hi pikachunet,

To get the treeview to run at startup, just add --treeview to your shortcut file. It will then open the treeview each time you launch the application.

What kind of keyboard shortcuts would you like to see in the treeview mode? Let me know, and I'll consider adding them to the application.

Thanks!

Better is:
"Set a Browser-Preference for each Entry"

Is it possible the set also:
- Google Chrome
- Microsoft Edge (Chromium)
- Internet Explorer
Maybe you could also just configure the export.
The import is available.
Furthermore I noticed that you cannot open web-based Version of StorURL (https://www.storurl.us/) anymore.
This was not set up, was it?

Thanks for your feedback.

  1. Thanks for the clarification John. I understood what you meant by default browser per bookmark.
  2. I believe it is already possible to set each of the browsers you listed as a browser in the application. For Edge, you currently need to define it manually as a custom browser, as Microsoft decided to go against all past conventions and make their Windows 10 "apps" not act like normal Windows applications. I haven't found an easy way to detect and automatically add Edge back in, and I haven't really put much thought into it, since I abhor "apps" on my desktop system and avoid anything that I don't have full control over.
  3. To import your bookmarks into StorURL online, you can just upload your StorURL 3.x database file (the *.sudb file created by the app) and it will automatically load all of your bookmarks in. Just choose that option in the Import Bookmarks page. The Export function of the desktop application is not needed for this anymore. You can also do the reverse from the website from your Profile page, just click the button that says Download Database. It will let you download a compatible StorURL 3.x database that will open directly in the desktop application.
  4. Thank you for pointing that out. Somehow my redirection for those vanity URLs got disabled. I've re-enabled it so that storurl.us, trueip.us and bikeman.us should work again.

Hi Ann,

This is a very common request, but currently the way the database is designed, it makes it difficult to actually implement. As a quick fix, I usually recommend just naming your bookmarks with a number sequence at the beginning to sort them how you would like. I know this is not ideal, but until I re-write the back end to use a different database structure, that's the best I can suggest.

A realy cool Tool.

Is it possible to integrate the following features:
1. Set a default Browser for each Browser.
(Windows File Share also going, that’s very cool but only when I press the Windows Explorer ~Browser~)
2. Drag and Drop URL from Browser direct to StorURL and from StorURL to Browser
3. Sync automatic with online Store by Startup the App and Change someting on the DB.
4. On the OnlineStorURL is it possible to set Icons, will this feature also come to the GUI-APP? And maybe with automatic the ICON from Website

Thanks for your feedback.

Hi John,

1. This sounds like a great feature, and I will add it to the list of things for me to add in the future. :)
2. Drag and Drop currently works from Firefox, as that my is my primary browser. If you drag the little icon next to the URL, it will allow you to drop in StorURL, then open and pre-populate the "Add new bookmark" window.
3. This is a feature I've considered in the past, but decided that it'd add a lot of complexity for something that was designed to mostly be an offline desktop tool.
4. The desktop application currently supports retrieving the icon for a bookmark from the site. It does not, however, have support to choose a custom icon. I'll add it to the list of requested features as well.

Thank you for your interest in StorURL. :)

Hi;

First of all, congrats on what seems like a nice tool. I've used it with Firefox and it seems to do very well with JSON files.

For Chrome, however, it can't seem to find the exported HTML file? Using Chrome bookmark manager, I export file bookmarks_08_11_2019.html, but StorURL's File => Import => Chrome Bookmark File shows "No items match your search" when using Windows 7.

It's looking for type "Bookmark File". The HTML file format is mapped to Chrome, so I'm not sure what the issue is. Unfortunately, this is a corporate environment, so I can't add any extensions to convert the file to JSON. I was able to import it as a Bookmarks HTML file, but that loses all folder information and etc.

Am I missing a step here somewhere? Or can you make any recommendations?

Hi William,

You do not need to export the bookmarks from Chrome to HTML in order for the import to work. You can just point StorURL directly at the Bookmarks file from your Chrome profile directory. In my case, the bookmarks file was here: C:\Users\joey\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Profile 1\Bookmarks

May 17, 2022
Hi yard,

You are correct, it is not possible to export from StorURL back into the browser. StorURL was designed to be the final resting place for bookmarks so that you could launch them in whatever browser you wanted. There are other tools out there that are better suited for transferring bookmarks between browsers. It may not be hard to program that feature, but it definitely is difficult keeping up with changes to browsers' bookmark formats. It's possible that in the future the structure could change, and then my application could potentially destroy or mangle your browser's bookmarks. That would be inconvenient at best and a major disaster at worst. In my opinion it's best to let browser providers handle their side of things, and I handle my own, and interact as little as possible.
